If your block has more than one stump, whether that’s a few left from a clearing job or stumps that have built up over several years, the job isn’t just one stump price multiplied by the number of stumps. Here’s what changes the price.
Why several stumps aren’t just “one price times the number”
A big share of what makes any stump job cost what it does is getting the machine, trailer and operator onto the property and set up. That part happens once per visit, not once per stump. Once the machine is on site and grinding, moving to another stump on the same block adds less time than the first one did, which is why batching several stumps into one visit is generally the most cost effective way to deal with more than one.
What still changes from stump to stump
Every job is different, and even within one visit the stumps aren’t identical. What changes the price:
- Size. Five small ornamental stumps and five large hardwood stumps on the same block aren’t the same job just because the count is the same.
- The number of stumps. More stumps means more grinding time overall.
- How far away each one is. Stumps spread across a block take longer than stumps clustered together.
- Ground conditions. Rocks and other hard ground slow the work down.
- Whether a tiny machine or ramps are needed. A stump the standard machine can’t reach may need a very small machine, or ramps set up to get to it, and that takes more time.
How a several stump job gets priced

The most useful things to send are photos of each stump with something next to it for size, at least one photo from further back that shows the area, roughly how many there are, and whether they’re spread across the block or clustered together.
