Stump Grinding in a Tight Backyard: Gates, Access and Machine Size
Before a stump grinder ever gets to a backyard stump, there’s a more basic question to answer: can it actually get there? Side gates, narrow side access and awkward corners are one of the most common reasons a job takes longer, or needs a different machine, than the stump itself would suggest.
Standard gate widths, and why they matter
Most side gates on an Australian house are somewhere between 900mm and a metre wide, enough for one person, a wheelie bin or a mower to get through comfortably. Some properties have gone wider, 1050mm to 1200mm, where bins, bikes or bulkier garden equipment regularly need to pass through the same opening. Anything narrower than that standard range, or a gate with a tight turn straight after it, is where machine size starts to genuinely matter.
Why access changes the job, not just the price
The right machine for an easy, open side lawn isn’t necessarily the machine that fits through a narrow gate, down a set of steps, or around a tight corner behind the house. Stump grinders come in a wide range of sizes, from really small to really big, and a small gate usually just means a small machine is needed. What to measure before you call
If you’re not sure whether your access is wide enough, measure the narrowest point the machine would need to pass through, not just the gate itself: a gate might be a metre wide but a garden bed, a bin, or a downpipe right beside it can narrow the real usable width. Measuring the tightest point along the whole path in, not just the widest bit, gives a far more accurate answer than eyeballing the gate alone.
A few photos of the stump and the access path, including the gate itself, the route in from the street and any steps, is the fastest way to get an accurate answer. Put something next to the stump for size, such as a tape measure or a shovel, and include at least one photo from further back that shows the area, so the right machine can be picked. If the stump is in a garden bed, say so.
