When you’re repairing a patch of lawn, matching the existing grass matters just as much as fixing the patch itself. Zoysia, buffalo and couch look different enough, and grow differently enough, that getting it wrong leaves an obvious mismatched patch for years.
Buffalo
Buffalo is the grass most associated with shade tolerance, and it’s become especially popular across the Sunshine Coast for exactly that reason: it copes with established trees, covered outdoor areas and homes that don’t get full sun everywhere. It’s also a soft, comfortable grass underfoot, which suits family yards with kids and pets. It can’t be grown from seed, so any repair or new area has to come from turf or runners.
Zoysia
Zoysia sits at the premium end of the three, forming a dense, fine textured, carpet like lawn that a lot of homeowners consider the best looking option of the three, if they’re willing to put in the establishment time and ongoing care it asks for. It genuinely suits Queensland’s warm, humid climate. One practical note: zoysia’s leaf blades have a high silicon content, which makes them tough on mower blades, so keeping blades sharp matters more with zoysia than with the other two.
Couch
Couch is the toughest and fastest growing of the three, which makes it the best choice for genuinely high traffic areas, a yard that doubles as a kids’ play space or a dog’s regular running track. It recovers from damage quickly and spreads fast to fill bare patches on its own, though that same fast growth means it needs mowing more often to keep it looking tidy, and it doesn’t tolerate shade nearly as well as buffalo.
What if you don’t know what’s already growing
If the lawn was established well before you owned the property, or it’s been a mix of whatever’s spread in over the years, it isn’t always obvious at a glance which grass you’ve actually got. Growth habit is one of the more reliable clues: couch is the fastest to spread and recover on its own of the three, buffalo is the soft, broad leafed one that copes well with shade, and zoysia is the dense, fine textured one that takes longer to establish but holds a noticeably neater, carpet like look once it has.
Why matching matters when you patch a lawn
These three grasses have different leaf textures, colours and growth habits, so patching a couch lawn with buffalo runners, or the reverse, doesn’t blend in the way patching with the same grass does. It stays visibly a different colour and texture indefinitely, not just while it establishes. Before repairing any patch, working out what’s actually growing in the rest of the lawn is the first step, not an afterthought.
Mixed lawns are more common than people expect
It’s not unusual for an established yard to actually carry more than one grass type, particularly where an extension, a fence line change, or a previous repair introduced something different to what was originally planted. Working out whether that’s the case before starting a repair avoids matching the wrong section of an already mixed lawn and ending up with a patch that clashes with both areas around it instead of blending into either.

Shaded yard: buffalo is the grass built for it. Want the best looking lawn and you’re happy to put in the care: zoysia. High traffic, kids, pets, fast recovery: couch. And whichever one is already growing in your yard is the one any repair needs to match.
